Jim McCarthy was more than a vacation club member — he was the very heart and soul behind the Eagle’s Wings Foundation. His story is a powerful example of how one person’s empathy can spark a legacy of social good.
A Vision Born in Puerto Vallarta
In the late 1990s, Jim McCarthy, a long-time Universal Vacation Club (UVC) member, spent time in Puerto Vallarta. During his visits, he befriended many locals — and was deeply moved by how different their lives were from the tourists’ experience. What struck him most was the gap: the beauty and luxury of the resorts contrasted sharply with social needs nearby.
Determined to make a change, McCarthy teamed up with the Villa Group’s founders to launch Eagle’s Wings Foundation in 1999.
He believed deeply in giving back to the communities that had welcomed him so warmly — and he turned that belief into action.
Putting Feet to the Mission
As the first president of EWF, McCarthy wasn’t content to just provide funds — he was hands-on. He personally handled paperwork, coordinated importation of supplies, and made frequent trips (at least twice a year) to deliver donated items to Puerto Vallarta and other communities.
He also prioritized relationships: visiting orphanages and charitable programs, evaluating their needs personally, and encouraging resort visitors to volunteer and contribute. His dedication laid the foundation for a culture of engagement and care within the organization.
A Legacy That Lives On
Though Jim McCarthy passed away in 2011, his legacy continues through Eagle’s Wings. The foundation is still fueled by the values he instilled: compassion, service, and community.
Today, under the leadership of people such as Eva Contreras, EWF continues to grow — supporting dozens of NGOs every year, distributing essential items, and mobilizing volunteers who carry forward Jim’s vision. Vive Puerto Vallarta
Why Legacy Matters
In the world of nonprofits, infrastructure and funding are critical. But it’s legacy — the guiding values and inspiration of a founder — that often keeps an organization grounded and true to its mission. Jim’s story reminds us that sustainable impact comes not just from money, but from a deeply human commitment to serve.
